Some Swedish beauty

So after four months in Indonesia I’m back in Sweden for some catch ups and family time. Lucky me my hometown is right by the ocean with a small surf scene that never existed when I grew up here (or at least I never knew). But last night I got to enjoy some ocean time with one of my favourites. Pure Swedish bliss. I might have missed the summer here but they say September is the month for surf (before the ocean freezes :))

That romantic getaway to… Ubud!

So I spent the last 30 hours in bed with a fever looking something like this (photo below – not above) and feeling extremely sorry for myself 😉oh-the-romantic-get-away-to-ubud-1

When life finally came back to me we thought it would be a good idea to do one of those romantic getaway trips you know. Go to Ubud get our chakras in shape and just chill out for a few days until we head back to Java. For you guys who don’t spend a lot of time in Bali, Ubud is the holistic, yoga, wellbeing and hippy mecca of Bali.  It’s usually quite cool but this time he he well we stayed a night and decided to come back to the coast 🙂 oh-the-romantic-get-away-to-ubud-3

This place where we stayed looks really cool and it was just that it was pricy for us (but it was like the 5th place we looked at and I was just to tired to keep looking ha) and there was a not a proper wall to the room next door – so much for the romance – ha (again). Like just a divider and a curtain, water in the toilet not working properly and yeah well. oh-the-romantic-get-away-to-ubud-4

The long road back to Bali

Oh well my flight back from Perth couldn’t land in Bali because of the ashes from the volcano. So I ended up in Surabaya for the night which was ahhh interesting. A lot of upset people being quite rude (shame on you’s) to the Air Asia staff that did such an awesome job organising transport and accommodation for all the 200+ passengers. The next morning there was still no news on when the airport might re-open so I decided to get on a domestic flight down to Banyuwangi and then travel overland back to Bali. This was a brilliant idea until I rocked up at the airport in Surabaya again just to find out that the airport in Banyuwangi was also closed… due to the ashes. After a bit of hassle getting a ticket refund (I was quite stoked getting the last seat on this flight an hour earlier) me an a kiwi girl decided to get a transport down to Banyuwangi instead of waiting around for airports to open. Oh yeah what didn’t go wrong? It took us two hours to leave Surabaya going back and forward to the airport picking up people and luggage being dropped on the road and picking more people up. Then the van broke down in the middle of the night when heading for the ferry and we ended up spending an hour at the mechanics (lot’s of love to Indo where you can actually find a mechanic at that time). About 18 hours since I left Surabaya I was finally dropped off in Medewi to catch up with the guys again. So happy 🙂

Kelia Moniz surfs and whipe outs Teahupoo

So I’m in Perth for a few days and Pax is in Singapore for they day to sort out visas and stuffs. Perth is so freaking cold oh well I’m back in the tropics later this week so shouldn’t complain. And finally I got to watch this video of Kelia Moniz being towed in on her log in Teahupoo – gaaaah what a legend! My Indonesian internet provider decided to block this clip thinking it was unsuitable…

Here it is if you wan’t to watch it 🙂

Coffee in Watu Karung – the paradise?

Took the scooty for a trip to Watu Karung to have  a coffee and look at the waves (Watu Karung is the spot for the surfers that’s on the pro tour (the wanna be pro tour), it’s a heavy barrel on a reef and we have some swell so thought it would be good to have a look). So we get there and there’s just one girl out there while the rest of the pro’s are sitting at the little warung having coffee contemplating about maybe going out 🙂 Then another girl paddles out and her first wave is a double barrel – we love watching the girls rip! After that the pro’s got their act together and made a move for the waves. surfing-pacitan-sidewalk-secrets-surf-travel-java-indonesia-watu-karung-2

From Batu Karas to Pacitan

No more mellow rights for us – we decided to make a move and ended up in Pacitan. I’ve been tricked back into surfing left waves again it seems but who cares when it’s this much fun? Just me and one more guy out this morning – I’m so stoked 🙂 Pax is stuck on the beach until tomorrow because of an ear infection…aduhhh what to do. We got some antibiotics and painkillers from the doctor in Cijulang but the ear was to swollen to look into but hopefully we’ll get it sorted here tomorrow.

What about traveling Sri Lanka with those Buddhist tattoos?

So before heading off to Sri Lanka I was googling around for visas and cool places to surf and stumbled upon this article – it’s about a British woman who got arrested and deported from Sri Lanka for displaying her tattoo of Buddha. And it seems to have happened to a few other travellers to… travel advice from the British is

‘The mistreatment of Buddhist images and artefacts is a serious offence and tourists have been convicted for this. British nationals have been refused entry to Sri Lanka or faced deportation for having visible tattoos of Buddha.’

Ehrm so Pax has not one but two sleeves with Buddha on his arms. So this is going to be interesting I thought while Pax suspected I was playing a trick on him. Anyways off we went and took the good advice not to wave our arms around passing through immigration. And then – well quite a few local people reacted when they seen Pax arms but I suspect only because of hearing about that British woman not because they felt offended in any way. And when we asked why it would be offensive it was hard to get a proper answer the best one we got is something along the lines that if you have Buddha on your arm and then do something bad it’s disrespectful to Buddha. But altogether I would say nothing to worry to much about – Sri Lankan people are cool.

Views from Ella

On our way out of Sri Lanka we made a stop in Ella. Ella is a cool little place up in the highlands where you can do some hiking since the temperature is not to hot to move in. So we checked into this amazing little guest house with awesome views of the hills and a waterfall.  And yeah to be honest I’m quite a lazy hiker, there’s this mountain in Bali that I say I’m gonna walk up to – but always next time I’m there. And next time sort of comes and goes all the time. So I had this idea that I would sit on our super awesome balcony with my coffee and my book and just chill out and enjoy the views. Well that didn’t happen which is a good thing, we had this professional hiker straight out of Nepal that we meet in Arugam bay with us. So Tim tricked us to just go have a look at the track on our first night and then since we’d already gotten that far we might just as well have a closer look and then we’re at the top of the world… or little Adams Peak. Second day we made the walk up the Ella Rock which was just as cool.

Hello from Arugam Bay

So finally we got our act together and made the move over to the East coast. Also known as the surfing mecka of Sri Lanka. In a small little fishing village called Arugam Bay is where it’s at.        surf-bums-in-sri-lanka-living-the-dream-arugam-bay-1Midigama still tried to keep us – giving us with two flat tyres on the way over. I didn’t really notice as was having a good snooze in the back of the van.

So today we’ve been on a tuk tuk tour trying to find some waves. First place we checked out was called peanut farm. It was like peanuts alright. I’d say the tuk tuk driver’s been talking the good waves up a bit…

So we’re checking out another flat spot… It’s still the beginning of the season here and not that much swell around so a lot of the spot’s are not working yet.

Main point in A-bay. Last night the guys had awesome waves. When I went down this morning it was 2ft of tiny mush closing out on the reef. Still 20 people out. The joys of a world famous surf spot I guess 🙂

Sceptical faces. Because we came back to check the waves two hours later…
